Hello Hello!
Happy Momentum Monday (on a Sunday)!
Last week, we talked about how ADHD is not a moral failing. You are not lazy, broken, or failing at life—your brain just works differently, and that means you need different strategies. (If you missed that email, go check it out because it was a good one.)
But here’s the thing… Even when we know ADHD isn’t a character flaw, we’re still really good at beating ourselves up for the hard stuff and not so great at celebrating when we get it right.
So let me ask you: Are you celebrating your wins as hard as you’re giving yourself shit for your struggles?
Why ADHD Brains Need to Celebrate Wins
ADHD comes with a built-in negativity bias—we hyperfocus on what went wrong and gloss over what went right. Why? Because the struggles are louder. They come with consequences, stress, and shame, so our brains lock onto them.
The wins? They feel smaller. Less urgent. Like they don’t “count” because we should be able to do those things anyway. (Spoiler: That’s a lie.)
But here’s the truth: If you don’t intentionally celebrate your progress, your brain won’t register it. And that means you’ll always feel behind, even when you’re making moves.
Want to dive deeper into your specific “brand” of ADHD?
How to Actually Celebrate Wins (Without Feeling Weird About It)
1️⃣ Say it out loud. Seriously. Verbal praise works, even if it’s just “Hell yeah, I did that!” Bonus points if you high-five yourself or give yourself a cheeky pat on the back (my personal fave 🤭).
2️⃣ Write it down. Keep a “Ta-Da List” alongside your to-do list. Every time you finish anything (yes, even answering that one email you’ve been avoiding), log it. Seeing your progress in black and white is powerful.
3️⃣ Create a reward system that actually motivates you. No, I’m not talking about “once I finish this project, I can finally relax.” Rest is a right, not a reward. I’m talking about giving yourself something tangible—a snack, a 5-minute dance break, a fun sticker. ADHD brains need immediate dopamine to reinforce success.
4️⃣ Reframe what counts as a win. Started a task you’ve been dreading? That’s a win. Took a break before burning out? HUGE win. Told your inner critic to shut up and step aside? Absolutely a win. Progress over perfection. Always. (Reminder: just in case you forgot, perfection doesn’t exist).
This Week’s Momentum Task:
Make a Wins List—literally right now. Grab your phone, a sticky note, whatever. Write down three things you accomplished today or this week or this month or this year! Don’t overthink it. If you showed up in any way, it counts. Then, CELEBRATE IT.
