ADHD and Self-Awareness: The First Step to Real Change

June 8th 2025

Hey there!

Happy Momentum Monday (on a Sunday)!

You ever realize you’ve been calling something a “bad habit” for years?

Like, “I’m always late,” or “I never finish what I start,” or “I just suck at routines.”

And then one day it hits you…

Wait. What if this isn’t about willpower or laziness or being a mess?
What if it’s a symptom?

That flicker of clarity, that moment when you stop spiraling in shame and start getting curious, THAT is the beginning of real change.

That’s awareness. And it’s the first step to transforming how you move through your day.

Why Awareness Matters

Awareness gives you language. It gives you options.
It shifts you from “What’s wrong with me?” to “Ohhh, that makes sense.”

And let’s be honest, if you’re constantly trying to “fix” something without understanding what’s underneath it, you’re just spinning your wheels. And that shit is exhausting on so. many. levels.

You can’t (necessarily) planner-sticker your way out of executive dysfunction, especially in the beginning.

You can’t hustle past burnout. Can we pleeeease stop trying to make it a thing?!

And you definitely can’t shame yourself into better routines or hate yourself into loving yourself.

But once you name what’s actually going on, the pressure starts to lift.

You stop thinking you’re broken and start seeing that you just need the right tools.

Here are a few patterns to look at with a fresh set of eyes:

  • “I’m always late” might be time blindness, transition trouble, or perfectionism.

  • “I procrastinate everything” could be fear of failure (or fear of responsibility), decision paralysis, or low dopamine.

  • “I can’t keep my space clean” often connects to object permanence, task initiation blocks, or overstimulation.

And here’s the trouble with ADHD that a lot of us don’t realize…these things are CONSTANTLY overlapping. It’s not just one thing. It’s all the things. All the time. Everywhere.

None of this makes you lazy (like your brain tells you). It makes you human…specifically a human with a neurodivergent brain. And once you are aware of your patterns, you can actually start working with your brain instead of fighting it. Ya know, the whole trying to be a square peg in a round hole situation.

This Week’s Action Step:

Pick one thing that keeps frustrating you. Doesn’t matter what it is, just the one that pops into your head first.

Write it down.

Ask yourself, “What might actually be going on here? WHY is this happening? Is it in my control? Is there a solution? If there was a solution what would it be?”

Then take a breath. Awareness alone is a win.

You don’t need to fix it all today. You just need to see it.

If this seems a little tricky and abstract and you’re looking for some support around stuff like this, fear not, I’ve got a spot for you!
